history
early years

the station first signed on air on october 11, 1971; operating independent station, first television station founded pappas brothers, mike, pete , harry, , served flagship station of company pappas telecasting companies. station s original studios located on mooney boulevard in visalia. funding kmph came general manager harry pappas plan of having hundreds of investors each investing small amount of money needed construct station, rather having 1 investor providing capital; result, pappas brothers had combined ownership stake of 30.5%, other 69.5% controlled other investors.


kmph carried operation prime time programming @ least in 1978.


throughout mid-1980s, kmph 1 of top independent stations in country. station received 100 miles (160 km) visalia. kmph formerly operated translator in merced, california on channel 17, kmph-ca.


since 1986

pappas signed affiliation deal fox kmph become charter affiliate of network in 1986 (the other pappas-owned stations, whns in greenville, south carolina , kptm in omaha, nebraska; joined fox 2 years later). kmph became fox affiliate when network launched on october 5 of year. kmph remains fox affiliate day; both , nbc affiliate ksee (channel 24) 2 stations in fresno unaffected 1985 network swap involving abc , cbs between kfsn-tv (channel 30) , kjeo (channel 47, kgpe) , later launches of cw , mynetworktv in september 2006. station relocated operations original studio in visalia current facility on mckinley avenue in fresno in 1990s.


ownership change

on may 10, 2008, thirteen pappas stations, including kfre, filed chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. result of bankruptcy, pappas telecasting companies given until february 15, 2009 sell these stations other owners. on january 16, 2009, pappas announced of stations, including kfre, purchased new world tv group (no relation named new world communications, switched of stations fox between september 1994 , july 1995), after sale received united states bankruptcy court approval. on april 2, 2009, pappas laid off 22 employees involved kmph/kfre duopoly. new world tv group formed new holding company known titan tv broadcast group (unrelated named smaller-market radio station owner titan broadcasting), completed purchase of of pappas stations involved in bankruptcy on october 15, 2009. titan announced sale of kfre-tv, kmph-tv , of company s other stations sinclair broadcast group on june 3, 2013. fcc approved sale on september 19, , sale officially finalized on october 3, 2013. completion of sale, kmph reunited bakersfield fox affiliate, kbfx-cd, formerly operated repeater of kmph, before sold fisher communications in 2005.
