mccloskey won 1942 caldecott medal make way ducklings. story set in boston, massachusetts features mallard pair nests on island in charles river. after time raising 8 ducklings on island, mother leads them public garden downtown. famously, friendly policeman stops traffic them cross busy street. story became boston institution. sculptor nancy schön created bronze version of mrs. mallard , ducklings in 1987, installed along walkway between pond , street. there thousands of children climb them every year , many more people photograph them; park annual site of make way ducklings mother s day parade, featuring hundreds of children dressed in costumes of favorite characters. since 2003 make way ducklings official children s book of massachusetts.
