on july 25, 1866, u.s. congress established rank of general of army of united states general ulysses s. grant. pay 4 hundred dollars per month, , allowance fuel , quarters except when headquarters in washington, shall @ rate of 3 hundred dollars per month. when appointed general of army, grant wore rank insignia of 4 stars , coat buttons arranged in 3 groups of four.


unlike world war ii rank similar title, 1866 rank of general of army four-star rank. rank held authority , power of 1799 proposal rank of general of armies though grant never called title.


in contrast modern four-star rank of general, 1 officer @ time hold 1866–1888 rank of general of army. (for few months in 1885 dying, grant accorded special honor , rank restored congressional legislation).


after grant became u.s. president, succeeded general of army william t. sherman, effective march 4, 1869. in 1872, sherman ordered insignia changed 2 stars coat of arms of united states in between.


by act of congress, on june 1, 1888, grade conferred upon philip sheridan, in failing health. rank of general of army ceased exist sheridan s death on august 5, 1888.
