Technical Subaru B5 TPH

10 kw (13 hp) motor-generator in b5-tph power unit (tms 2005)

the tph drivetrain featured electric motor-generator sandwiched between gasoline motor, used miller cycle, , automatic transmission. electric motor intended reduce turbo lag , boost fuel economy, estimated consumption of 40 mpg‑us (5.9 l/100 km; 48 mpg‑imp) on epa combined city/highway cycle. b5-tph used manganese lithium-ion batteries.

the gasoline engine had output of 191 kw (256 hp) @ 6,000 rpm , 343 n·m (253 ft·lb) of torque @ 2,400 rpm. electric motor had outputs of 10 kw (13 hp) , 150 n·m (111 ft·lb) of torque.

the tph system developed intent of mass production. subaru s prior concept hybrid, b9 scrambler, featured sequential series hybrid electric vehicle (sshev) powertrain. in sshev design, electric motor used sole source of propulsion 80 km/h (50 mi/h), switching on gasoline engine above speeds. newer tph system more cost-effective because used more compact electric motor , battery.

the batteries developed nec lamilion energy, ltd., had been co-founded in 2002 nec , fhi develop lithium-ion capacitor promised better energy density , durability compared normal storage batteries. nec lamilion later absorbed automotive energy supply corporation, go on supply lithium-ion battery pack nissan leaf electric vehicle.
