In Hecuba and Metamorphoses Polydorus (son of Priam)

in euripides tragedy hecuba, ghost of polydorus character, , death cause of main conflict of play. polydorus’ ghost presents prologue of play, explaining sent thrace under protection of king polymestor in case troy fell. son, priam sent gold if troy should fall son continue support himself. once troy fell, however, polymestor killed polydorus throwing him sea , stole gold. polydorus laments fact body adrift in sea without proper death rites.


later in play, slave woman tells hecuba polydorus’ body has been found washed on shore. hecuba explains saw murderer of polydorus in dream , polymestor. aided agamemnon , other captive women, hecuba proceeds avenge son’s murder killing polymestor’s sons , blinding him. same story of polydorus subject of episode in ovid’s metamorphoses.
