geographic tongue (benign migratory glossitis)

glossitis classified group of tongue diseases or gastrointestinal diseases. may primary, there no underlying cause, or secondary sign or symptom of condition. can acute or chronic. speaking, there several clinical patterns of glossitis, more common others.

atrophic glossitis

atrophic glossitis, known bald tongue, smooth tongue, hunter glossitis, moeller glossitis, or möller-hunter glossitis, condition characterized smooth glossy tongue tender/painful, caused complete atrophy of lingual papillae (depapillation). dorsal tongue surface may affected totally, or in patches, , may associated burning sensation, pain and/or erythema. atrophic glossitis non-specific finding, , has great many causes, related iron-deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia, b vitamin complex deficiencies, unrecognized , untreated celiac disease (which presents without gastrointestinal symptoms), or other factors such xerostomia (dry mouth). although terms möller , hunter glossitis used refer glossitis occurs in vitamin b12 deficiency secondary pernicious anemia, used synonyms atrophic glossitis generally. in article, term glossitis, unless otherwise specified, refers atrophic glossitis.

candidiasis may concurrent finding or alternative cause of erythema, burning, , atrophy.

median rhomboid glossitis

this condition characterized persistent erythematous, rhomboidal depapillated lesion in central area of dorsum of tongue, in front of circumvallate papillae. median rhomboid glossitis type of oral candidiasis, , causes symptoms. treated antifungal medication. predisposing factors include use of corticosteroid sprays or inhalers or immunosuppression.

benign migratory glossitis

geographic tongue, termed benign migratory glossitis, common condition affects dorsal surface of tongue. characterized patches of depapillation , erythema bordered whitish peripheral zone. these patches give tongue appearance of map, hence name. unlike glossitis due nutritional deficiencies , anemia, lesions of geographic tongue move around tongue on time. because in geographic tongue, new areas of tongue become involved condition whilst affected areas heal, giving appearance of moving lesion. cause unknown, , there no curative treatment. there symptoms associated lesions, burning sensation may present, exacerbated eating hot, spicy or acidic foodstuffs. consider geographic tongue stage of fissured tongue, since 2 conditions occur in combination.

geometric glossitis

geometric glossitis, termed herpetic geometric glossitis, term used refer chronic lesion associated herpes simplex virus (hsv) type infection, in there deep fissure in midline of tongue, gives off multiple branches. lesion painful, , there may erosions present in depths of fissures. similar fissured lesions not associated hsv, may occur in fissured tongue, not tend painful. name comes geometric pattern of fissures longitudinal, crossed or branched. described occurring in immunocompromized persons, e.g. have leukemia. however, association between herpes simplex , geometric glossitis disputed due lack of gold standard techniques diagnosis of intraoral herpetic lesions, , high prevalence of asymptomatic viral shedding in immunocompromized individuals. treatment systemic aciclovir.

strawberry tongue

strawberry tongue (also called raspberry tongue), refers glossitis manifests hyperplastic (enlarged) fungiform papillae, giving appearance of strawberry. white strawberry tongue there white coating on tongue through hyperplastic fungiform papillae protrude. red strawberry tongue white coating lost , dark red, erythematous surface revealed, interspaced hyperplastic fungiform papillae. white strawberry tongue seen in scarlet fever (a systemic infection of group β- hemolytic streptococci), , red strawberry tongue occurs later, after 4–5 days. strawberry tongue seen in kawasaki disease (a vasculitic disorder occurring in children under 5), , toxic shock syndrome. may mimic other types of glossitis or vitamin b12 deficiency.
