the western league had been renamed american league in 1900 league president bancroft (ban) johnson, , declared second major league in 1901. johnson created new franchises in east , eliminated franchises in west. philadelphia had new franchise created compete national league s philadelphia phillies. former catcher connie mack recruited manage club. mack in turn persuaded phillies minority owner ben shibe others invest in team, called philadelphia athletics. mack himself bought 25% interest, while remaining 25% sold philadelphia sportswriters sam jones , frank hough.


the new league recruited many of players existing national league, persuading them jump american league in defiance of national league contracts. 1 of players jumped new league second baseman nap lajoie, formerly of crosstown phillies. won a.l. s first batting title .426 batting average, still league record. athletics , american league received setback when, on april 21, 1902, pennsylvania supreme court invalidated lajoie s contract athletics, , ordered him phillies. order, though, enforceable in commonwealth of pennsylvania. lajoie sold cleveland, kept out of road games in philadelphia until national agreement signed between 2 leagues in 1903.
