herman began coaching career in 1998 @ texas lutheran receivers coach. took position in 1999 @ university of texas @ austin graduate assistant under mentorship of greg davis. during tenure @ texas, herman worked offensive line, included all-american leonard davis.

sam houston state

after completing graduate assistant position, herman joined sam houston state wide receivers coach twice sparking bearkats southland conference championships , ncaa division i-aa playoffs. in first season @ sam houston state, herman coached jonathon cooper, named ncaa division i-aa wide receiver of year. herman produced all-conference receivers in each season , produced 3 all-american wide receivers.

in 2004, finished 11-3 , advanced division i-aa championship s semifinals. bearkats offense ranked second nationally in passing offense, averaging 358.5 yards, while bearkats 471 yards of total offense ranked fifth among division i-aa schools.
