the ludington public library started ludington library association on april 9, 1872. meeting announced interested in organizing library. @ time there interest in public reading room attainment of mental improvement. meeting held @ ludington hall on pere marquette lumber company store @ southwest corner of main street (now gaylord avenue) , ludington avenue effect permanent organization of library association. articles of association filed april 12, 1872. brought @ official city meeting on evening of april 24, 1872 @ same location @ pere marquette lumber company store (later bought pierce manufacturing company). organization perfected , officers elected in 1872 , 1874.



on april 30, 1872 free reading room opened 90-day trial. few days later letter received james ludington of milwaukee, expressing interest in library idea. in letter draft $100 used in purchase of books. s. f. white visited milwaukee in june of year in interest of library association , made purchase of books. local citizens donated other suitable books. spring of 1874 sizable library of 300 400 books had been gathered. library association occupied small building stood south of pere marquette lumber company s big store used freely anyone.


soon thereafter various plans considered new location. d. l. filer, had been president, proposed on behalf of pere marquette lumber company donate site on ludington avenue. in proposal lumber necessary construction provided. james ludington donate $2500 city of ludington building new structure , $1,000 each d. l. filer , john mason loomis. new structure accommodate library on main floor county offices, court room, , city council chambers upstairs. building library, however, never built since james ludington didn t come through donation because of financial setbacks in milwaukee. meanwhile, instead there mason county courthouse built in 1873 on pere marquette street accommodate city , county offices only.


nothing further done toward plans new library structure , in time matter dropped. library association subsequently moved second floor of gebhart building @ southeast corner of ludington avenue , harrison street. later in 1877 library moved temperance hall after new construction. @ northeast corner of ludington avenue , james street. between 1877 , 1881 library association hosted lectures guests included susan b. anthony , schuyler colfax.


on june 11, 1881, there major city fire , building burned ground, destroying library contents. there no insurance , $500 worth of books lost. effort made eugene allen of executive committee , few others reorganize new library, nothing serious came of on 20 years. central school (later longfellow school) shared books public many years, inadequate.
