the underlying rocks of west african craton covered in northwest sediments of taoudeni basin, 2 main outcrops of crystalline rocks in northern reguibat shield in mauritania , southern leo shield includes bougouni , kaneiba outcrops, both of contain valuable minerals. there may petroleum reserves in taoudeni basin.
