geologically, mali consists of vast flatlands of granite , shale covered sandstone , alluvial quartz. mali extends on 2 main geological structures, west african craton in west , tuareg shield in southeast, came @ end of precambrian era between 600 , 550 million years ago. suture zone west of adrar des ifoghas mountains.


the underlying rocks of west african craton covered in northwest sediments of taoudeni basin, 2 main outcrops of crystalline rocks in northern reguibat shield in mauritania , southern leo shield includes bougouni , kaneiba outcrops, both of contain valuable minerals. there may petroleum reserves in taoudeni basin.
