before new broadcasting house opened, bbc s manchester base @ broadcasting house in piccadilly, , 1958 occupied 4 floors of peter house in st peter s square. former studio of mancunian films in rusholme bought in 1954 , milton hall on deansgate home of bbc northern symphony orchestra became bbc philharmonic in 1982.


staff moved building on weekend of 12–13 july 1975, , operational september 1975 , officially inaugurated headquarters of bbc north on 18 june 1976. second television studio opened in may 1981 regional tv news, leading closure of broadcasting house in piccadilly after 52 years. 800 staff worked @ site. new broadcasting house home bbc manchester, bbc radio manchester, bbc north west, bbc philharmonic orchestra , bbc religion , ethics department. on opening, radio station named bbc radio manchester; changed name bbc gmr (and briefly, gmr talk) before reverting original name in april 2006.


in 2010, building offered sale bbc s move mediacityuk rendered surplus requirements , sold £10 million in april 2011. bbc sign front of building removed in november 2011 shortly after last department, regional tv, moved mediacityuk ending 35 years of broadcasting studios on sunday 27 november 2011.
