early life
john albert broadus born in 1827 in culpeper county, virginia. educated @ home , @ private school. taught in small school before completing undergraduate studies @ university of virginia in charlottesville, virginia.
career
broadus ordained in 1850, became pastor of baptist church in charlottesville. delivered lecture @ university of virginia in memorial professor gessner harrison in 1873. decade later, in 1883, delivered address on confederate cause @ louisville s cave hill cemetery. address important part of reunion, argued both sides partly correct in positions led war.
in 1859, broadus became professor of new testament interpretation , homiletics @ new southern baptist theological seminary. during american civil war, served confederate chaplain robert e. lee s army in northern virginia. in 1888, became southern seminary s second president.
in 1889, broadus delivered beecher lectures @ yale divinity school.
personal life
broadus married maria harrison, daughter of gessner harrison (1807–62), professor of ancient languages @ university of virginia. broadus s second marriage charlotte eleanor sinclair (1836–1913) on january 4, 1859.
death
broadus died in 1895.
