ellen browning scripps commissioned valentien paint series of illustrations of california wildflowers intention of publishing compendium of flora of california. valentien worked on project ten years, , scope of botanical subjects grew encompass native grasses, ferns, , trees. scripps decided not publish flora. estate donated of paintings in collection, 1094 in total, san diego natural history museum in 1933.
