history
origins , designation

the new york state legislature created statewide system of unsigned legislative routes in 1908, 2 of routes using parts of ny 63. stretch of ny 63 connecting dansville hampton corners in town of mount morris became part of route 15, highway continuing south hornell , north through mount morris caledonia. farther north, piece between medina , ridgeway designated part of route 30, cross-state route running niagara falls rouses point. route 30 followed current ny 31 rochester; however, realigned on march 1, 1921, use ridge road instead, bypassing medina–ridgeway highway.

in mid-1920s, 3 sections of modern ny 63 received posted route numbers first time. wayland dansville, road westernmost part of ny 52. ny 63 unnumbered dansville northwest hampton corners, ny 36 entered west on current ny 408 , followed path of ny 63 geneseo. road unnumbered again until pavilion, @ point ny 62 joined south , utilized of current ny 63 , cr 63-1 reach lake ontario shoreline in yates. 1926, numbered portions of current ny 63 state-maintained, unnumbered parts geneseo piffard , groveland hampton corners.


ny 63 assigned part of 1930 renumbering of state highways in new york. initial routing of ny 63 different modern alignment; in fact, portion of modern ny 63 still follows original alignment section between hampton corners , pavilion. south of mount morris, route followed ny 408 dalton , continued south on old state road , west on allegany county s cr 16 ny 19 west of village of angelica. ny 63 overlapped ny 19 south belvidere, ny 63 turned onto modern cr 20. continued west on cr 20 , ny 446 through cuba junction ny 16 in hinsdale, ended. north of pavilion, ny 63 followed modern ny 19 lake ontario shoreline in hamlin.

the portion of ny 63 north of pavilion designated part of ny 19 in 1930 renumbering. however, unlike current ny 63, ny 19 continued north 2 miles (3.2 km) on lyndonville road past ny 18 lake ontario shoreline. south of mount morris, modern ny 63 designated ny 36a mount morris dansville. dansville wayland, highway part of ny 39 (later ny 245), new route replaced ny 52 in 1930 renumbering. first change ny 63 came c. 1939 when alignments of ny 19 , ny 63 swapped, placing both routes on modern alignments. ny 63 altered again in december 1940 follow former routing of ny 36a south mount morris dansville, continued east wayland way of overlap ny 245.

ny 245 truncated northeastward naples c. 1972 , ny 63 cut ny 36 in dansville around same time, leaving dansville–wayland highway unsigned reference route. partially reversed in late 1970s or 1980s when ny 63 reextended wayland. on april 1, 1989, ownership , maintenance of lyndonville road north of ny 18 transferred state of new york orleans county part of highway maintenance swap between 2 levels of government. ny 63 truncated end @ junction ny 18 while former routing lake became cr 63-1.


in mid-2000s, route reconfigured in northern part of medina use main , commercial streets instead of center street , prospect avenue. change made part of village project known pass thru project, , realignment eliminated three-block overlap easternmost part of ny 31e on center street. ownership , maintenance of ny 63 s former alignment transferred state village on july 1, 2010, part of highway maintenance swap gave commercial street , northernmost block of main street state.


proposed mount morris–pavilion bypass

as part of large scale study in 2000s, nysdot determined ny 63 mount morris pavilion, along us 20 , ny 77—termed route 63 corridor —were major trouble routes, because of increased truck traffic using corridor bypass between i-390 in mount morris , new york state thruway in pembroke. publicized , perhaps fought-over possibility mentioned of new expressway mount morris pembroke, bypassing these 3 routes. wyoming county chamber of commerce driving force behind this, hoping interchanges in perry, warsaw , attica promote business growth.


while residents along ny 63 corridor against increased truck traffic along corridor (spurred north american free trade agreement), of same residents, along other groups, fought proposed expressway. general consensus of of these groups nysdot should impose restrictions on ny 63 corridor , force trucks remain on i-390 , thruway travel between buffalo , pennsylvania.
