the site former location of star , garter hotel, closed in 1906. building used military hospital, known star , garter home disabled sailors , soldiers, during world war i.


the site donated queen mary (consort of george v) in support of plans establish home paralysed , permanently disabled soldiers. hotel banqueting hall , ballroom temporarily used house disabled soldiers, found unsuitable specialised needs. demolition of hotel buildings commenced in 1919 , 1920 1924 home s residents transferred sandgate, kent while new star , garter home disabled sailors, soldiers , airmen built on site of hotel. new building dedicated in 1924 women of empire s memorial of great war. formally opened george v , queen mary on 10 july 1924.


in 1948 residents of home took part in forerunner of paralympic games, first national athletic event disabled athletes, organised dr ludwig guttmann.


the star , garter home received royal charter in 1979, adding prefix royal name. since opening of second home @ solihull in 2008 charity has used plural form of name, royal star & garter homes .


some of residents died @ home buried in 1 of 2 dedicated sections in nearby richmond cemetery. cemetery contains 2 plots dedicated deceased residents home, 1 of marked bromhead memorial, large classical-style monument listing names of not commemorated elsewhere.
