the 1930s saw important change in style of paris gardens. 1852 until end of 1920s, paris gardens had been designed jean-charles alphand (1817–1891) , protégé, jean camille formigé, , had similar picturesque style. beginning in 1930s, each paris garden had different designer, , styles varied. tended more regular , more geometric, more classical french formal garden, , made greater use of sculpture, particularly work of modernist sculptors of period. gardens tended smaller, , placed in outer neighborhoods, near edge of city.


several of new parks built on land had been old fortified zone around city, wide strip no building allowed, created between 1840 , 1845 adolphe thiers. land turned on city in 1919, , supporters of green space urged turned belt of parkland around city, instead government of third republic chose use of land public housing , industrial sites. instead of circular belt of green space, built series of small squares, including square du serment du koufra (1930) in 14th arrondissement; square du docteur-calmette (1932) in 15th arrondissement; , square marcel-sembat (1931) in 18th arrondissement.


the important landscape architects of period léon azéma, classically trained artist won prestigious prix de rome, designed dozen squares, including parc de la butte-du-chapeau-rouge; , roger lardat, designed series of squares , redesigned parts of bois de vincennes , gardens of trocadero.

the major paris architectural , landscape project of 1930s exposition internationale des arts et techniques dans la vie moderne in 1937, on hill of chaillot. old palace of trocadero, had been used in 2 previous exhibits, demolished , replaced large terrace panoramic view of seine , eiffel tower, , modernist white palais de chaillot, 2 wings enveloped top of hill. picturesque landscape gardens on slopes of hills, built jean-charles alphand 1878 exposition preserved, 21 hectares of new gardens designed léon azéma , architects carlu , boileau. central element of garden became series of cascades, lined statues, , long basin containing rows of fountains , 2 powerful water cannon. basins, fountains , dramatic lighting @ night designed roger-henri expert, designed interior decoration on famous french ocean liner normandie. many of statues exposition, leading french sculptors of time, kept in place after exposition, or found new homes in other new city parks of period.

the parc de la butte-du-chapeau-rouge, known square de la butte-du-chapeau-rouge, in 19th arrondissement, 1 of series of squares built in old fortified zone surrounded city since reign of louis-philippe. designed léon azéma, , similar plan gardens of trocadero 2 years earlier. broad lawns , winding paths took advantage of steep slope , served showcase sculpture.


the main architectural features buffet d eau, or cascading fountain, @ lower entrance, crowned statue of eve sculptor raymond couvènges (1938) , classical portico sculpture serving entrance playground. @ high end of park, 2 belvederes, reached winding paths, offer panoramic views of city.

parc kellermann built @ same time square de la butte-du-chapeau-rouge, @ southern end of city, @ edge of 13th arrondissement. larger chapeau-rouge, (5.55 hectares compared 4.68) entitled called park rather square. served site several of several smaller pavilions of 1937 exposition. park designed architect jacques gréber, architect-in-chief of 1937 exposition, , had notable career in united states, designed benjamin franklin parkway in philadelphia.


the site of park had 2 different levels; of park built in old bed , banks of biévre river, covered over. gréber merged 2 different styles; lower part of park picturesque, lake, stream, false rocks, groves of trees, winding paths , other characteristic features of park of time of napoléon iii. upper part, bordered boulevard kellermann, 1930s combination of classicism , modernism, cement portico, 2 brick excedres decorated bas-relief sculptures in 1930s style; large parterre , basin; , long tree-lined alleys. upper part of park today offers exceptional views of city, suffers noise of neighboring highway circles paris.
