the eruption of havre seamount not noticed scientists, , volcanologists not aware havre seamount active submarine volcano. after pumice raft detected, researchers retrospectively examined satellite imagery , past seismic activity in attempt pinpoint time , location of eruption produced pumice raft. seismologists discovered cluster of earthquakes (ranging in magnitude between 3.0 , 4.8) occurred 18–19 july 2012. these earthquakes consistent magma rising magma chamber prior eruption. analysis of satellite imagery showed ash plume appear on 18 july 2012 , conclude several days later. although volcanologists believed eruption might have occurred @ monowai seamount, possibility later ruled out. believed eruption unrelated 2012 te māri eruption @ new zealand s mount tongariro.


in 2015 scientific expedition set out study changes of seafloor topography in area surrounding havre seamount. same group of researchers mapped distribution of floating pumice blocks driven wind, ocean currents , eddies.
