originally called salyut , added self-timer mechanism below film advance knob original hasselblad design. however, add-on abandoned , seen on or prototype cameras. salyut went mass production around 1957. automatic aperture mechanism later added , camera s designation changed salyut c . after salyut c camera model evolved kiev 80 . further addition of hot shoe electronic flashes, camera s name became kiev 88 . exported west zenith 80 .
the kiev 88 used screw type lens mount similar original hasselblad mount, there mixed reports on compatibility between two. film backs not compatible between kievs , hasselblads due different gear mechanisms. however, kiev 88 viewfinders compatible hasselblad 1600f , 1000f, , current hasselblad v-system models.
the kiev 88 lens mount modified accept pentacon 6 mount lenses around 1999 , designated kiev 88cm. many of these cameras have found way around world, united states. considered inexpensive alternatives in medium film format camera market (see below).
