in response prior year when minnesota north stars appeared purposely lose games finish fourth instead of third , avoid tougher matchup first-place chicago, first round matchups changed first-place team played fourth-place team , second played third. previously, first-place team played third-place team , second-place team played fourth-place team.


in addition, change made way semi-final matchups determined well. instead of having winner of series between first , third-place eastern division teams play winner of second , fourth-place western division teams , winner of first versus third-place western division teams against winner of second , fourth-place eastern division teams, semi final pit highest remaining seed in eastern division play lowest remaining seed west , vice versa.


despite injuries several key players, notably leading scorer jean ratelle, new york rangers beat defending champions montreal canadiens in first round of playoffs, strong play unheralded players such walt tkaczuk. rangers went on sweep chicago black hawks in 4 straight games during semi-final. chicago had beaten pittsburgh penguins in 4 straight games.


boston handled toronto maple leafs in 5 games, facing st. louis blues team had eked out hard-fought 7 game victory against north stars in quarter-final. powerful bruins set record goals in four-game series pounding blues 28–8 on four-game sweep.
