von wietersheim s xiv motorised corps participated in polish campaign in 1939, fought @ radom , warsaw, in battle of kock. corps later saw action in battle of france in 1940 wehrmacht drove ardennes english channel.


in june 1941, unit under von wietersheim participated in operation barbarossa, where, part of first panzer group, served army group south on southern sector of eastern front, advancing via lvov, tarnopol , zhitomir kremenchug , mirgorod, , south marfinskaya in mius sector. corps spearheaded first panzer group s difficult , impressive drive kiev during battle of kiev (1941), , participated in battle of rostov (1941).

early in battle, von wietersheim used tanks protect advance don river volga, criticized being inappropriate use of armored formation.[1] after, having encountered exceptionally strong resistance red army troops, suggested partial withdrawal don, due high casualties among troops in salient north of stalingrad, west of volga. deemed acts of incompetence , defeatism, relieved of command head of german sixth army, friedrich paulus, , subsequently dismissed hitler. historian alan clark reported von wietersheim returned germany after dismissal, reappearing in military context in 1945 private in pomeranian volkssturm unit. there reference wietersheim chief of military transport division in 1942, perhaps immediate replacement command of xiv panzer corps, clear whether 61-year-old private or military functionary, career over.
