the 2zz-ge 1.8 l (1796 cc or 109.6 in³) version built in japan. bore 82 mm (3.23 ) , stroke 85 mm (3.35 ). uses mfi fuel injection, has vvtl-i, , features forged steel connecting rods. compression ratio 11.5:1, necessitating premium gasoline (91 octane or above in (r+m)/2 scale used in north america). power output engine varies depending on vehicle , tuning, celica gt-s, corolla t-sport, lotus elise , lotus exige offering 141 kw (189 hp), american versions of 2003 matrix , pontiac vibe versions developing 180 hp later years offering anywhere 173 hp in 2004 164 hp in 2006 due recurved powerband. differing power figures 2004 through 2006 due changes in dynamometer testing procedures. australian variant corolla sportivo has 141 kw@7600 , 181n·m torque. due noise regulations, toyota recalled them flash of pcm output classify them in more lenient sports car noise category. corolla compressor , lotus exige s add supercharger intercooler achieve 225 hp (168 kw), while exige 240r s supercharger increases output 240 hp (179 kw). addition of non-intercooled supercharger elise sc produces 218 hp (163 kw) considerable weight saving. supercharged engines not labeled 2zz-gze.

toyota commissioned yamaha design 2zz-ge, based on toyota s zz block, high-rpm operation , producing power peak near top of rpm range. high-output cam profile not activated until approximately 6,200 rpm, (lift set-points between 6,000-6,700 rpm depending on vehicle) , not engage until engine has reached @ least 60° celsius (140° fahrenheit.) toyota pcm electronically limits rpm 8200 rpm via fuel and/or spark cut. lift engagement , engine redline vary application. lotus 2zz-ges rev limited 8500 rpm, example, whereas celicas rev limited 7900 8200 rpm in north america, depending on model year. first japanese versions rev limited 8600 rpm peak of 190 hp. consequently, impossible over-rev engine throttle alone; downshift higher gear must involved. typical over-rev can damage oil pump, commonly disintegrating lobe ring, resulting in damage similar picture @ right. oil pump achilles heel of 2zz, though incidents rare , occur due fault of driver. briefest period of oil starvation fatal engine design.


the high pressure cast aluminum alloy engine block had metal matrix reinforced (mmc) cylinder walls. mmc reinforcement material composed of ceramic parts , fibers.


for first few years of production, engines notorious failing lift bolts . did not damage engine, hamper performance high output cam profile unable engage. toyota fixed problem in late 2002 redesigned bolt installed on later engines. earlier engines problematic bolts can fixed via toyota-issued tsb requiring new bolt installed in place of old one.


the 2004 , newer matrix , corolla xrs models equipped smog pumps , have hole above each exhaust port in engine head , manifold air injected achieve complete fuel burning before exhaust stream reaches catalyst. 2zz-ge heads 03/03 onwards carry modification if vehicle not have air injection system.
