düsseldorf lies @ centre of lower rhine basin, delta of düssel flows rhine. city lies on east side of rhine, except district 4 (oberkassel, niederkassel, heerdt , lörick). across rhine, city of neuss stands on delta of erft. düsseldorf lies southwest of ruhr urban area, , in middle of rhine-ruhr metropolitan region.


düsseldorf built entirely on alluvium, mud, sand, clay , gravel. highest point in düsseldorf top of sandberg in far eastern part of city (hubbelrath borough) @ 165 metres (541 ft). lowest point @ far northern end in wittlaer borough schwarzbach enters rhine, average elevation of 28 metres (92 ft).
