each canton controlled government unit called municipalidad. term reflects fact cantons in costa rica have approximately same function municipios ( municipalities ) in many other spanish-speaking countries. administrative unit consists of 2 bodies: municipal executive (concejo municipal) , executive body consists of mayor (alcalde / alcaldesa municipal), title introduced in 1998.


the mayor s main duties liaise municipal council, district councils , entire administrative apparatus of canton, , approve , implement decisions taken municipal council. number of members of municipal council varies 1 canton another, , elected local elections held every 4 years. head of council titled municipal president (presidente municipal). council s main task manage canton @ local level, , responsible planning basic policies , establishing budgets. more specifically, responsibilities include urban , agricultural planning , organizing cultural affairs, health care, education , industry. each municipal president appoints number of working commissions deal issues specific municipality.
