early career

in 1883, howe entered entertainment industry robert m. colborn. partners bought miniature working model of coal mine , showed in pennsylvania towns , baltimore s masonic temple, did little business. howe bought out partner s share , made arrangements exhibit miniature during summer months @ glen onoko in mauch chunk (now jim thorpe, pennsylvania). part-time career. in winter months returned earlier work painter. in 1890, , mr. haddock bought phonograph, demonstrated people of northeastern pennsylvania, opening in scranton on march 10, 1890. exhibited miniature coal breaker summer returned giving phonograph concerts in fall, time without partner. sold model coal mine , next several years toured phonograph. during time, began styling himself professor or lecturer . howe among first give full-length phonograph concerts.

during 1890s, howe attempted acquire kinetoscope thomas edison, unsuccessful in doing so. in 1896, attempted lease vitascope raff & gammon, again unsuccessful. created own projector, animotiscope of electrician. animotiscope improved on previous motion picture projectors incorporating second take-up reel, allowing showing of longer films. howe showed first movie in wilkes-barre in december 1896. movie based on of thomas edison s films , incorporated phonograph sound effects. howe continued show films, of newsreels, local movies, , travelogues. there time when used both phonograph , movies during shows, concentrated on movies. creating own travelogues , newsreels 1901. first person incorporate backstage sound effects in movies.


howe s movies received public. venues filled when showed movie. 1903, controlled 6 traveling movie companies based in wilkes-barre. although of competitors went out of business rise of nickelodeons around 1905, howe s film company continued operate, primatily focusing on large cities. howe, along burton holmes , fred niblo, invited participate in motion picture patents company in october 1909. 1912 1919, active in united states , canada.


in 1910s, howe made films industry, , made war films during world war one. howe involved in making films flying airplane 1911.


one of howe s films lyman h. howe s famous ride on runaway train, made in 1921. filmed moving train on steep slope, producing vertiginous affect, influenced cinerama.
