when second world war broke-out newfoundland dominion governed directly uk. newfoundland declared war on germany on 4 september 1939, 1 day after united kingdom. however, no newfoundland infantry units raised or sent overseas. instead, newfoundland raised 2 artillery regiments; 59 heavy (newfoundland) regiment , 57 (later 166) (newfoundland) field artillery regiment.


in 1949, after pair of referenda, newfoundland joined canada latter s 10th province. royal newfoundland regiment became primary militia unit province. regiment ranked last in canadian forces order of precedence due newfoundland s entry canada in 1949, long after other canadian regiments recognized in order of precedence. freedom of city exercised royal newfoundland regiment in st. john s, newfoundland , labrador on july 1, 1963. since 1992, soldiers , sub-units of regiment have served augment regular force units in cyprus, bosnia, sierra leone , afghanistan on peacekeeping , combat missions. on 30 august 2010, corporal brian pinksen died of wounds 8 days after being injured improvised explosive device in afghanistan, making him regiment s first combat fatality since first world war.
