competition format
qualification

a total of 380 athletes competed in sailing competitions of games. qualification period began @ 2014 isaf sailing world championships in september 2014. hosts, brazil guaranteed 1 quota place in each of ten events.

scoring

racing @ 2016 olympics fleet racing competitors started , sailed course together. scored according low-point system, first place scored 1, second place scored 2, etc. there series of preliminary races followed final medal race. rs:x, 49er, 49erfx, , nacra 17 classes had 12 preliminary races, other classes have 10.


at end of preliminary races, top ten boats in each class (i.e. lowest total scores) advanced medal race. each boat might exclude 1 race total. medal race not excluded series score , counts double. boat lowest overall total after races winner. ties in final rankings broken in favour of competitor/crew finishing higher in medal race.
