the attack on king joseph of portugal.


on night of september 3, 1758, joseph riding in unmarked carriage on secondary, unfrequented road on outskirts of lisbon. king returning tents of ajuda after evening mistress. somewhere along way 2 or 3 men intercepted carriage , fired on occupants. joseph shot in arm , driver badly wounded, both survived , returned ajuda.


sebastião de melo took control of situation. concealing attack , king s injuries, initiated swift enquiry. few days later 2 men arrested shootings , tortured. men confessed guilt , stated following orders of távora family, plotting put duke of aveiro on throne. both men hanged following day, before attempted regicide made public.
