terence o neill born on 10 september 1914 @ 29 ennismore gardens, hyde park, london. youngest son of lady annabel hungerford crewe-milnes (daughter of marquess of crewe) , captain hon. arthur o neill of shane s castle, randalstown, first mp killed in action during world war i. family assumed surname o neill royal licence in lieu of original name chichester. chichesters trace lineage name o neill through mary chichester, daughter of henry o neill of shane s castle.


o neill grew in london , educated @ west downs school, winchester , eton college. spent summer holidays in ulster. following school spent year in france , germany , worked in city of london , australia. in may 1940 received commission @ royal military college, sandhurst, , went on serve in 6th guards tank brigade catering officer during second world war, in both of brothers died. many other unionist politicians, rank held during war followed him political career, hence captain terence o neill.


on 4 february 1944 married katharine jean (16 january 1915 –15 july 2008), daughter of william ingham whitaker, of pylewell park, lymington, hampshire. had 1 son, patrick (b. 1945), , 1 daughter, anne (b. 1947).
