the idea of cross-harbor rail tunnel received support connecticut transportation planners, believed such rail connection reduce truck traffic on heavily congested connecticut turnpike.


the proposed tunnel serve long island, includes new york city boroughs of brooklyn , queens nassau , suffolk counties, combined population of 7.7 million. served long island rail road, busiest commuter railroad in north america. rail freight service on long island provided new york , atlantic railroad (nya), operates on lirr tracks , carries 20,000 carloads each year. nya connects csx transportation via hell gate bridge csx transportation s oak point yard in bronx. connects csx , norfolk southern in greenville section of jersey city, nj, via cross harbor float barge service, new york new jersey rail, llc, owned port authority of new york , new jersey.


the new york city boroughs of bronx , staten island have active rail freight connections, via oak point link , arthur kill vertical lift bridge, respectively. latter connects staten island rail lines west of hudson, , serves howland hook marine terminal , municipal waste facility, there no rail connections between staten island , rest of new york city or long island. manhattan last saw freight service in 1983. west side freight line converted passenger service in 1991, west side freight yards replaced trump place , elevated portion south of 30th street converted high line park.
