Characteristics South African Class 5B 4-6-2

h.m. beatty

with these locomotives, beatty allowed ⁄2 inch (13 millimetres) increase in boiler pitch compared of first 2 karoo class engines, 7 feet 1 inch (2,159 millimetres) above railhead.

this increase still did not allow sufficient clearance between boiler barrel , 60 inches (1,524 millimetres) diameter coupled wheels. pockets in boiler barrel, similar used on earlier locomotives, therefore still necessary. boilers of first 2 locomotives, numbers 905 , 906, fitted coale patent safety valves, while numbers 907 , 908 had ramsbottom safety valves. eccentrics , motion actuated driving (centre) axle instead of trailing axle. firebox had inside width of 4 feet 2 ⁄2 inches (1,283 millimetres).
