in march 1916, after 2 months of training, first camel patrols left depot @ abassi on outskirts of cairo patrol libyan desert. in 1915 senussi had attacked british , egyptian outposts along suez canal , mediterranean coast. resulting senussi campaign largely on then, patrols show senussi british watching them, , protect border areas.
around same time long-range patrols, each of thirty men, went south , south-east of sinai desert detect ottoman incursion area. when patrols discovered ottoman outposts, brigade organized company-strength raid against outposts. icc undertook similar patrols in north protect rail , water lines, vital british attack.
