a month , half after signing winnipeg jets, family member found rypien dead in crowsnest pass, alberta, home on august 15, 2011. rypien had been scheduled flight winnipeg previous night have knee evaluated day. when did not meet appointment, heisinger (who had since become jets assistant general manager) attempted locate him. following death, heisinger told media rypien had been suffering depression more ten years. jason jaffray, former moose , canucks teammate had signed winnipeg, expressed surprise @ rypien s death, explaining while aware of mental health, felt new man and…the happiest [he d] ever seen him.


several hours after death announced, canucks fans began assembling memorial outside of rogers arena. 2 days later, fan-organized gathering of approximately 300 occurred @ memorial. rypien s memorial service held @ alberta stella arena (where had played minor hockey) in blairmore, alberta, on august 20. bieksa on hand 1 of casket s pall bearers. 1 of numerous former teammates, general managers , figures rypien s hockey career in attendance. in subsequent 2011–12 nhl season, canucks honoured rypien ceremony prior home game against new york rangers on october 18. rypien s parents, step-parents , brother on ice, four-minute tribute video shown on jumbotron. bieksa further presented family rypien s game-worn jersey last season canuck. team announced $50,000 donation in rypien s memory bc children s hospital foundation. amount, included contributions nhl players association s goals & dreams fund, designated fund promotion strategy youth , young adults cope mental health issues. in honour of rick rypien, winnipeg jets wear decal, double r initials in blue inside black circle on team s helmets.


on august 16, 2012, family , friends of rypien gathered in hometown of crowsnest pass celebrate legacy part of fifth nhlpa goals & dreams cup. bieksa, along nhl players tanner glass, darcy hordichuk , kris versteeg joined children crowsnest pass kidsport chapter, program rypien enthusiastically supported. kidsport received 50 sets of brand new hockey equipment nhlpa goals & dreams fund in rypien s memory.


rypien 1 of 3 nhl players have died in 2011 off-season; other 2 new york rangers enforcer derek boogaard , retired wade belak. following boogaard , rypien s deaths, nhl commissioner gary bettman told media league substance abuse , behavioural issue programs – initiatives both players had been involved (boogaard s death due lethal combination of alcohol , oxycodone).
