the 1990s

the league dominated teams neftchi baku, kapaz, turan tovuz , shamkir. however, financial struggles had bad impact on local clubs , teams such khazri buzovna, shamkir, vilash masalli , shafa baku went bust due increasing debts. in 1997, kapaz known unbeaten run club s final record 1997–98 league campaign stood @ 22 wins, 4 draws , 0 losses, out of 26 games total, unbeaten run not matched in single season team in azerbaijani league division.


the 2000s

as league entered new century, neftchi baku found facing new challengers. challenged emerging khazar lankaran, inter baku , baku in both competitions. country s football received major blow in 2002, when uefa imposed two-year ban in response long-standing conflict between association of football federations of azerbaijan , majority of country s top flight clubs. domestic championship abandoned result of conflict , top clubs prevented players playing national team, tax officials probing allegations of fraud @ azerbaijan federation. under management of agaselim mirjavadov, khazar lankaran finished azerbaijan cup winners in 2006 , 2007, while becoming league champions in 2006–07 despite losing title neftchi in 2004–05 during championship play-off. qarabağ first ever team azerbaijan reach uefa europa league play off-round during seasons 2009–10 , 2010–11. few gave chances qualification next round, although aghdam side caused quite stir against favorites rosenborg, honka, twente , wisła kraków.


the 2010s

under gurban gurbanov s management, qarabağ became second team represent azerbaijan in european cup.


the 2010s brought bright start, neftchi emerged champion after 6 years of unsuccessful run. in next season, neftchi repeated domestic success after sealing seventh title in club s history. in year, neftchi baku became first azerbaijani team advanced group stage of european competition. in 2012–13 season, neftchi managed win 3 titles in row. in 2013–14 season, qarabağ managed win 2nd title after 21 years, , continue win domestic title consecutively. in 2014, qarabağ became second , successful azerbaijani team advanced group stage of european competition. after consecutive participation in europe league, in 2017, qarabağ ağdam became first azerbaijani team advanced group stage of champions league.
