scientists not aware eruption had occurred until huge pumice raft sighted , photographed @ 14:40 nzst on 31 july 2012 maggie de grauw while on commercial flight faleolo, samoa auckland, new zealand. emailed pictures dr scott bryan, senior research fellow @ queensland university of technology. after discussion ascertained raft around 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) north of auckland. bryan contacted olivier hyvernaud laboratoire de géophysique, tahiti, confirmed location terra/modis imagery nasa. raft subsequently sighted members of new zealand defence force on 9 august 2012—several weeks after eruption had occurred. spotted orion aircraft , approached , sampled strategic sealift ship hmnzs canterbury. pumice raft measured approximately 480 kilometres (300 mi) in length , more 48 kilometres (30 mi) in width, making floating island larger in surface area israel. officer in royal australian navy quoted saying weirdest thing [he had] seen in 18 years @ sea .
