tropical depression 4 formed in southeastern caribbean on evening of july 4. next day, strengthened tropical storm dennis. storm began moving rapidly west-northwest, , reached hurricane strength on afternoon of july 6 while approaching southern coast of hispaniola. next day strengthened rapidly become category 4 hurricane. dennis moved between jamaica , haiti on july 7. dennis reached peak strongest recorded atlantic storm form before august minimum central pressure of 930 mbar south of cuba – record stand 8 days until emily broke it. on july 8, dennis passed on cuba close capital, havana. second episode of rapid intensification occurred on july 9 moved north toward gulf coast of united states. dennis made landfall category 3 storm southeast of pensacola, florida.


dennis claimed @ least 88 lives: 56 in haiti, 16 in cuba, 15 in u.s. , 1 in jamaica. total damages estimated @ us$4–6 billion, including $2.23 billion in united states , rest in caribbean. dennis damaging cuba, storm wiped out significant portion of citrus crop. storm struck near end of cuba s dry season, farmers not yet prepared heavy rainfall brought storm. in united states, dennis drew comparison hurricane ivan of previous year, both smaller , weaker ivan @ landfall , caused fewer damages, partly because region had not yet rebuilt.
