on blacksburg campus, majority of buildings incorporate hokie stone building material. hokie stone medley of different-colored limestone, including dolomite. each block of hokie stone combination of gray, brown, black, pink, orange, , maroon. limestone mined various quarries in southwestern virginia, tennessee, , alabama, 1 of has been operated university since 1950s.
the duck pond
the duck pond man-made water feature created in 1930s, situated along northwest portion of blacksburg campus. notable feature gazebo located on south side connected picnic , seating areas pedestrian pathways. adjacent solitude, greek-revival home built in 1800s, oldest structure on campus.
gargoyles
there 15 gargoyles appear on tech buildings, older buildings, including hillcrest, saunders, , eggleston halls. although some, on eggleston archway, functional, majority merely ornamental. among more distinctive gargoyles on campus cowgoyles seen on agricultural buildings.

april 16 memorial
the april 16 memorial located in center of side of drillfield in front of burruss hall. memorial consists of 32 hokie stones, 1 each victim, , stone in center honor of fallen , injured victims. on night of april 16, 2007, students placed pieces of hokie stone in semi-circle, , led creation of present-day memorial.
